Ruler:Octavia di CarellaPopulation:~9500 The most populous town in Qiala as long been a destination for pilgrims looking to be blessed by the holy waters.

Size Over Status

Though it may not be the capital of the duchy, Carella is still the largest town. This is mainly attributed to how unpopular the duke the is, something that has driven many away from Paladira. With a near doubling of Carellas poulation over the 20 years of his reign, duke Miro frequently imposes new taxes on the town to incentivise its population to move back. However, most would rather live a life with additional taxes than endure a life of hypervigilant guards in the capital.

Locations

Inns

1 - The Cracked Cup

Whenever the locals need a drink, this tavern is the place they head. There aren’t many rooms available, but the seating is plentiful and the drinks are cheap, made locally with materials from the nearby farm.

2 - Hillshade House

From its spot atop a small hill, this high-end tavern boasts a view that streches all the way to Abosham’s Hills. The lower floors are placed underground in complete darkness for the comfort of its residents, and owing to its recent remodeling by the carpenter’s guild, the house offers a gorgeous balcony in the sunlight from which residents can enjoy their meals. Naturally, such views come at a cost, and only a few wealthy individuals can afford it.

3 - The Frosty Star

Located on the road down towards Yntol, this location is frequented by the town’s guards. This doesn’t mean others are unwelcome, but many choose to keep some distance as brawls are known to break out in the establishment.

4 - The Blessed Drop

Carella’s oldest inn lies along the road to Paladira. Named after the town’s fabled fountain, it is a favoured inn by travellers and traders, but the prices are a little too steep for most of the town’s inhabitants.

Shops

Antonio’s

The dwarf Antonio Dain Baroli runs an establishment well known for its peculiar selection of wares. He has a reputation for tough, but fair bartering and has even been favoured with some guild contracts from time to time.

2 - Pioro’s

One of the older shops in Carella, Pioro’s is run by Varra di Carella. The gnome carries on the tradition of her predecessors by offering the town’s cheapest general goods, though the quality is inconsistent.

3 - The Travelling Trader

The store of Giona Padira is located near the caravan grounds and focuses on selling equipment to travellers. Over time, they have also made a business of reselling weapons from caravan guards and mercenaries going through town, enough to have opened up a small smithy with grindstones. They make sure to only take small jobs, so as to not get on the bad side of The Guilds, and the blacksmiths guild doesn’t have enough of a presence in the town to pay attention to them while they stick to repairs.

4 - Midora’s

Another general goods store in the town, this newly-repurposed building is run by the brothers Vaidan and Dovan di Khazantia. Their location next to the town’s water-mine brings them in a lot of customers from the townsfolk.[^1], Ruler of the city

5 - The Brewery

Customers looking for expensive goods will come to Alayna Giardi’s store by the fountain. The orc has a contract with the alchemists guild and has a good stock of potions for anyone with the means.

6 - Diggers’ Delve

Out by Barleybrine Farm, Emilio Eston Fioss runs a shop with farming tools and supplies. He’s known for his fair prices and is also available for hire to perform simple tasks and repairs.

Farms

1 - Abosham Farmstead

The Abosham family has been important throughout Carella’s history. They were among the first settlers in the town and have held the position of Mayor at several points through its existence. The current head of the family, Laurencio Abosham, keeps out of politics. The family instead focuses on tending to their farm and supplying the town with crops and fruits.

2 - Gravelground Farm

Named for the tough soil it is placed on, Gravelground hasn’t been around for very long. The area used to contain an assortment of individually run sites for growing vegetables, as only a few plants are resilient enough for the area. However, a few decades ago, Carrasa Afari and her wife, Aina, managed to bring around enough money to buy all of the area to grow vegetables in a more organized fashion.

3 - Barleybrine Farm

The farm itself has fallen into disrepair ever since the owners dies without leaving any heirs. However, the community has taken over growing the crops to keep the city stocked with grains.

Food

1 - Tomillo’s

The bakery is run by the leshy Bramble and is responsible for most of the inhabitants’ supply of bread and baked goods. Many of the town’s children are employed there as well to keep it running efficiently enough.

2 - Golden Dough

Located within the town’s inner walls, the Ember Karasan runs a bakery for wealthy customers seeking exotic and fancy pastries.

3 - Barrio’s

A location frequented by most, the town’s butcher, Keegan Barrio, is another central player in Carella’s food supply. Together with his apprentices, he buys kills from both hunters and guildmembers alike to resell.

Others

Town Hall

The seat of the town’s mayor, Octavia di Carella, and her subordinate administrators. The town hall is a large building that remains open to any with an opinion to be heard. There are rooms used for court hearings and guards can always be found here in case someone is in need of assistance. At least in theory. In practice, only a select few are able to go here and get any semblance of help without being stalled for days by guards and administrators unwilling to do much for anyone who doesn’t pay them.

Guild Hall

Like most official guild buildings, this one stands out from the town around it. The style is vastly different with its large curves and complex shapes built to impress rather than any practical reason. While some members of the alchemists guild are present at most times, it is not uncommon for the doors to remain closed for several days on end as the town has little need of guild intervention and even less ability to pay for it.

Mercenaries - The Hatcheteers

Quarry

With Carella’s growing population, there is always a need for more building materials. Thus, the quarry never sleeps. Fullers carry loads of stone to building sites, and the sounds of their pincers digging into the ground can be heard at any time of day.

Water - Water Mine

As soon as the holy fountain stopped being enough to supply the town with water, a frenzied search for a second source began. At first, the location of the quarry was tested, but by chance, a fully-loaded fuller crashed through the ground here and revealed an easy-to-access underwater lake. Since then, work has been done to secure the site more and the well has been expanded to connect with other watersources, but the location remains the same.

Barracks

As the town is the closest to Tandia’s border with Yntol, the barracks are large, though at the moment most of the space is wasted. Frequently, warriors will arrive from the garrisons by the border to have some weeks off duty in town before travelling down south again.

Training Grounds

Originally mean for the guards to run exercises, the training grounds have partly become co-opted by the caravans and pilgrims coming to town, as well as some semi-permanent tents for newcomers without proper housing.

Caravan Grounds

Right between the roads to Yntol and Paladira, the caravan grounds are often occupied by travelling merchants and their temporary stalls. While the merchants spend their nights in the town sleeping at the inns, their hired mercenaries tend to camp out here, keeping the area active at all times of the day.

Holy Fountain

Even before the the khazantin conversion of Tandia, Carrella was considered a holy place. At the centre of the town, water is flowing out of a naturally formed fountain. This was naturally declared as a holy miracle by whatever gods remained to look down upon the broken world, and the settlers came soon after.

Once the guilds moved into the town, they placed an enchantment on the fountain, making the waters an additional light source for the town. As most people are unaware this was guild craftmanship, it has only further grown the legend of the magical properties the waters posess, driving more people to stop by the town.

Nowadays, there isn’t enough water flowing out of the finely-sculpted waterspout to feed the nearly ten thousand inhabitants of the town. As such, the town has grown outwards towards a deep cavern with a water-mine.
